AFTER ČIURLIONIS

Improvisations Inspired by Čiurlionis’ Music

Janas Maksimovičius – saxophone
Dmitrijus Golovanov – piano

The Lithuanian Jazz Federation presents original instrumental improvisations inspired by the works of M.K. Čiurlionis.

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of M.K. Čiurlionis’ birth, his art remains a source of inspiration for many artists, and his music continues to captivate and enchant audiences. The project "Paskui Čiurlionį" is an interpretation of the music of this Lithuanian genius, presented through the artistic perspective of two jazz and improvisational music masters – Dmitrijus Golovanov and Janas Maksimovičius.

The concert program "Paskui Čiurlionį" consists of arranged preludes for piano by M.K. Čiurlionis. As a historically recognized improvisational genre, preludes fit perfectly within the philosophy of jazz masters and improvisers. Their skills and experience allow them to explore and develop possible directions in the evolution of Čiurlionis’ music.

The program has been prepared by renowned Lithuanian jazz and improvisational musicians – saxophonist Janas Maksimovičius and pianist Dmitrijus Golovanov. Both artists are prominent and active figures in the cultural scene, having performed on major stages across the country. Their concert activities span a broad geographical range, and they have collaborated with numerous international musicians. Janas and Dmitrijus are not only devoted artists but also respected and engaged educators.

In "Paskui Čiurlionį", a unique approach to interpreting Čiurlionis’ music is revealed, fostering a cultural dialogue between classical music, contemporary jazz, and improvisation. While interpreting the preludes, the musicians deliberately step away from jazz stereotypes, instead incorporating authentic motifs characteristic of Čiurlionis' harmonic and musical language. This duo, maintaining an almost telepathic connection, gives new life to Čiurlionis' music by transforming and reconstructing it into expansive improvisational forms.

During the concert, the new CD album "After Čiurlionis" (to be released in 2025) will be presented, and audience members will have the opportunity to purchase it after the performance.
